About Outerly
At Outerly, we believe our local green spaces and sidewalks are the best places for human connection to happen. Every week, we match small, curated groups of strangers for fully planned walking outings around different neighborhoods in our cities. We do this to provide the ideal environment for connections to happen organically, and to help our community explore more of the cities they live in on foot. Our big, bold vision is that anyone, anywhere in the world can find a group of friendly people to walk with through Outerly.
That's the what, but here's our why: the people who show up to walk every week. The lawyer who is obsessed with Formula 1, the recent graduate who just moved here without knowing a soul, the seemingly shy software engineer who you couldn't get to stop talking once their favorite fantasy novel came up. Every single person who decided to take a chance and walk with complete strangers on a Saturday morning. Every single person who has left an Outerly walk with a new friend.
Our people are the heart of everything we do.
We’re looking for a City Lead to help us manage and grow our community in the DC area. The City Lead will be responsible for matching groups, creating itineraries and routes, creating and maintaining local partnerships, and sending communications to our community members. They will also participate regularly in outings to get to know our walkers and embed themselves into our community.
This is a part-time, hybrid role (5-10 hrs/week) to start, with room to grow as we do. We expect work to be mostly remote, with some in-person events in the DC and Baltimore areas each month.
About the Role
As our City Lead, you’ll be a first line of human connection for our DC community. You will support our customers and members by organizing interesting and unique outings, developing custom walking routes, and participating in the community on the ground here.
This role is perfect for someone who’s passionate about building community, cares deeply about user experience, and thrives in an early-stage, mission-driven environment.
What You'll Do
- Serve as the face of Outerly in the DMV by attending outings, contributing to social media, and leading customer communications
- Write and schedule weekly email newsletters to our members and walk participants
- Gather & record content for Outerly’s Instagram, TikTok or other social platforms
- Find and facilitate new local partnerships with businesses and other communities in DC
- Gather feedback and help us identify ways to make Outerly a beloved experience for our customers
- Contribute new ideas and processes to a small, growing company
- Work closely with the founder to ensure we scale with intention and heart
Our Ideal Candidate
- 1-2 years of experience leading, building, and/or participating in IRL communities
- Deep knowledge of Washington, DC and its suburbs, particulary walkable neighborhoods and local businesses/events
- Previous experience at a startup or small business and have an interest in working at an early stage social impact or tech company (bonus points if you've started your own!)
- Self-starter who can operate well in ambiguity and is passionate about solving the loneliness epidemic
- Highly organized and loves spreadsheets, documents, and folders
- Energized by being around people and love creating warm, welcoming experiences
- Available 5-10 hours a week, sometimes on weekends, with 25-30% in person at outings
- Live in DC or the surrounding area and have access to a car (some regional travel may be required)
- Has previously participated in an Outerly walk (optional, but helps you understand how we work and the value we bring to our community!)
